What is this?

26/12/2008

Day ago, I got an email from my hosting provider:

Your website has just reached the bandwidth or CPU limit provided with your free hosting account.  We suggest this is due to the success of your website and we acknowledge your website is very popular!

Unfortunately we need to disable accounts that reach their hosting quotas, which unfortunately has meant your site has had to become suspended.

Your monthly bandwidth or CPU quota will be automatically reset on the 1st of each month and your website will then be accessible again.

I was confused. I didn’t think that my website was popular enough to eat that much bandwidth. So I checked my blog rate on Technorati, and got zero result.

Finally, I got this later email the next day.

Yesterday (Dec 24th) a failure occurred in our quota tables which resulted in an email being sent suggesting that your disk / CPU quotas had been exceeded.

This was / is not correct, and has been resolved.

You can ignore this previous email sent, and we apologize for the inconvenience caused.Yesterday (Dec 24th) a failure occurred in our quota tables which resulted in an email being sent suggesting that your disk / CPU quotas had been exceeded.

I’m feeling good now.  I was afraid the aggregator I tested eats to many bandwidth. But It didn’t seems so (yet).

Simple Widget Styling

23/12/2008

Do you ever using widget in your blog?
Sometimes when I added widget in my blog, the position was aligned left. Can we make it a little bit in the center?
In this writing, I tried to apply some simple styling to modify your widget. Are you ready?

First of all, you must choose a widget to enroll. In this writing, I used widget from Dilbert (I’m the big fan of it). This was the code given by them.
<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://widgets.dilbert.com/o/478bf96b7bf0b5a2/494cffca172eaa7d/478cddf3fcd52701/8a2fafd6/-cpid/71bc012ffa85d617" id="W478bf96b7bf0b5a2494cffca172eaa7d" width="160" height="300"><param name="movie" value="http://widgets.dilbert.com/o/478bf96b7bf0b5a2/494cffca172eaa7d/478cddf3fcd52701/8a2fafd6/-cpid/71bc012ffa85d617" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="allowNetworking" value="all" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /></object>

As usual, you could just copy and paste the code to the Text Widget on your wordpress control panel. After saving the changes you made, go and see to the homepage and see the widget. It will looks like this.

Now, trying to add some styling codes on your Dilbert’s Text Widget. I’ll try to make the position into the center. The codes are like these:
<div style:"text-align:center;">
<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://widgets.dilbert.com/o/478bf96b7bf0b5a2/494cffca172eaa7d/478cddf3fcd52701/8a2fafd6/-cpid/71bc012ffa85d617" id="W478bf96b7bf0b5a2494cffca172eaa7d" width="160" height="300"><param name="movie" value="http://widgets.dilbert.com/o/478bf96b7bf0b5a2/494cffca172eaa7d/478cddf3fcd52701/8a2fafd6/-cpid/71bc012ffa85d617" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="allowNetworking" value="all" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /></object>
</div>

Save the changes and refresh the homepage. The widget will be centered just like this.

Now, you can try another styling widget on your own. If you find something interesting on the process, don’t mind to tell me about it. Happy trying!!

Alternative Softwares

19/12/2008

As my graduation from college happened, my license on using Microsoft softwares were expired. Currently, my college signed a MoU about licensing Microsoft softwares used by its students, lecturers, and staffs. Since I’m already graduated, so my license was automatically gone. After then, because I had no money (yet), I was thinking on finding alternatives for the softwares expired. I also wanna change the habit of using pirated software. So I was searching for some alternatives.

First of all, the most used softwares were Microsoft Office series. It includes documents writer, spreadsheet, and presentation tools. Luckily, some nice developer already develop an open source OpenOffice.org and AbiWord. OpenOffice.org already has documents writer, spreadsheet, and presentation tools included. But AbiWord was just documents writer (CMIIW).

Second of all, maybe not really important, Microsoft OneNote. It’s an organizer software. With it, you could write some notes, to-do list, arrange your schedule, and many things. In fact, this tool was awesome. The feature was outstanding and fun-to-use. Although couldn’t overcome the OneNote, EverNote was one of the alternatives I used. It has clipping features, to-do list, notes searching, and could be accessed using web, phone, or standard PC. Best of all, It provide free license with some limitations. But it’s worth to try.

Third of all, the image processing software called Adobe Photoshop. I admitted that I couldn’t use this software, but I still need a software to manipulate images. Talking about the alternatives, I could mention GIMP and Paint.NET. You could get both of them for free. Both of them were comparable to Adobe Photoshop.

Fourth of all, the vector drawing software. Most of the people were using CorelDRAW. Did it has alternative? Yes of course. I would mentioned Inkscape as the alternative. It has unique features that made it comparable and different from CorelDRAW. And the best thing, it’s an open source software (and lower requirement also).

Fifth of all, maybe not everybody use it, Macromedia Dreamweaver. This is an IDE for developing web application using (mainly) PHP. The alternative? Aptana Studio was one of them. This IDE based on Eclipse and provided features to develop web application easily. It already support PHP, Ajax, Ruby on Rails, Jaxer, and even Phyton. It also provided free license with limitation.

I think that’s all for me (for right now). What next? Maybe you have some alternatives to share? Why didn’t you tell me?

Internet at Home

17/12/2008

When I was a student, I worked mostly using internet. At that time, the connection at my campus was awesome. I could spend an hour or three surfing the world wide web. Addiction finally caught me. Even at my boardroom, I registered into internet service provided there. I could spent my time on the blue nowhere back then.

Right now, when I was at home, I could find them. There were some internet cafe, but still I didn’t feel like go there. So I always try to find some ways to get connected. There was internet connection provided by telephone service company. I just need to dial up to them and I’ll get connected. But it costs a lot.

One of the alternatives I used was using my CDMA phone as a modem. Using time-based counting, it costs half than the default internet I mentioned before. This connection speed was still better than the default. So I kinda enjoy it, until now.

Couple weeks ago, the telephone company called my dad and gave him an advertisement about internet connection. As a lecturer, they would give my dad a discount if he subscribe to them. The speed was better than the default they gave using dial-up. They provided two packets, time-based or volume-based counting. With the same cost, we could choose 50 hours or 1GB internet connection. Which one should I choose?

At first I was thinking choosing 50 hours. With this option, I think I could download some resources in the net with no volume limitation. I told this option to my dad and he told it to the agent that came to the house. Two days later, the installation guy came. After installation, we got confirmation that the connection for us was volume-based. I felt some disappoint with this. The guy told me that we can change the option in the next month.

After some days playing with the connection, dunno why, I felt the volume-based maybe not a bad options. I could spent hours browsing the net or writing blog with lower cost. It’s because the idle pages didn’t send or receive packages. I couldn’t do this using time-based option. At last, I think I wouldn’t change the option, and stand still with the volume-based instead. What do you think?
